PICK A LANE AND GIVE DEEPLY
Our entire society progresses and thrives in part due to corporate donations. There are hundreds if not thousands of worthy causes that would benefit from your support. However, it’s challenging to create systemic change around multiple philanthropic issues all at once.
Think impact. How can your company leverage unique areas of expertise to improve a social or environmental issue? Can you tackle a specific initiative with your competitors (yes, competitors!) and make a significant, positive change?
Giving is about more than dollars. It’s about knowledge, time, and building long-term relationships that can change lives. When we scatter our efforts or under-staff our impact programs, the potential for real and lasting impact is limited.
As your company encounters an ESG obstacle (for instance, I often hear that there is a lack of diverse applicants in technology) perhaps you can zero in on this challenge as an area to invest. What if your company could be part of solving this issue for the future through the funding of STEM education for underrepresented groups? Coupled with internships, reverse mentoring and inclusion training, how would your company look in the years ahead? What pathways might you open up for the industry?
_____
Something you can start today:
Survey your stakeholders (employees, customers and partners) about the social and environmental issues in your industry or community. Lean in to one area where your company resources can make a difference. Set goals and KPIs around specific positive impact.
Something else for later:
Long-term, effective change often involves the unstoppable trifecta of business, NGOs and government. Make a point of understanding and contributing your company’s voice to policy regulations in your area of impact.
